If you look closer at the cards' text, you will notice that the third line of the German Revised card (on the left) differs from its German Fourth counterpart: "rote Karte im Spiel" vs. "bleibende rote Karte im Spiel".

The introduction of the word "bleibende" (Eng. permanent) reflects the change in wording from English Revised (on the left) to English Fourth (on the right).

Interestingly, the English word "target" does not make it into the German Fourth translation. In the first few German editions, the concept of targeting is handled loosely and is not really firmed up until later, in the Introductory Set (copyright 1996).

The text difference is by far the most varied of all of the card differences and serves to uniquely identify 36 Revised cards.

T1 - Compound words (7 cards).

Since German uses compound words more than most languages, it is sometimes tough to squeeze German sentences into small areas (like a Magic card text box) without making word breaks; therefore, many changes involve breaking a compound word at a different place. As always, German Revised on the left, German Fourth on the right.

For Samite Healer, the translator moved the word break from an internal syllable (Scha-) to a (more correct) word boundary (Schadens-).

For Stasis, the translator moved the word break from an internal syllable (Ver-) to an incorrect word boundary (Versor-).

For Reverse Damage, the translator moved the word break from an incorrect word boundary (hinzuad-) to a correct one (hinzu-).

The other 4 cards that had changing word breaks are:

• Wall of Swords (mächtigen Za- → mächtigen Zau-).
• Wall of Water (Brüllen setz- → Brüllen setzte).
• Wanderlust (fügt dem Be- → fügt dem Beherr-).
• The Hive (Be- → Behandle).

T2 - Grammar corrections (16 cards).

Because of the huge, worldwide success of Magic the Gathering (at one point, it was known as Magic the Currency), more resources could be put into translations. It is expected, therefore, that some hastily-translated German cards were cleaned up. As always, German Revised on the left, German Fourth on the right.

Some cards experienced a word change:

• Mana Short (Alle Gelände → Alle Länder).
• Power Sink (wenn erwünscht → wenn benötigt).
• Mana Flare (des entsprechenden Typs → des gleichen Typs).
• Manabarbs (einen → 1).
• Channel (Aufstockungen wie Unterbrechungszauber → Aufstockungen wie einen Unterbrechungszauber).
• Living Artifact (Lebens-Spielmarke → Lebensmarke)
• Llanowar Elves (Llanowar-Wald → Llanowarwald).
• Cursed Land got the proper gender (Der verzauberte Land → Das verzauberte Land).
• Helm of Chatzuk lost the article (die Bündisfähigkeit → Bündisfähigkeit) for the German version of banding.
• Kormus Bell lost a word (zu schwarzen 1/1 Kreaturen → zu 1/1 Kreaturen).

Mesa Pegasus and Sea Serpent were standardized.

And so was Black Vise. I'm unsure where Schwarze Presse came from as the card was also named Todespresse in the German Beta version.

However, some errors were introduced.

Karma (einen Schadenspunkt → ein Schadenspunkt) incorrectly changed the gender of Punkt from masculine to neuter.

And Earthquake (Das Erdbeben fügt jedem → Das Erdbeben fügt jeden) incorrectly changed the pronoun's case from dative to accusative.

This would be analagous to changing the English text from "Does X damage to each player" → "Does X damage each player".

T3 - Punctuation changes (3 cards).

For some reason, the punctuation of 3 cards was slightly modified from one edition to the next. As always, German Revised on the left, German Fourth on the right.

Drain Life gained a comma in German Fourth (right after the black mana symbol).

Uthden Troll lost a period (after Regeneration).

And so did Wall of Fire (after Zuges).

T4 - Rule alignment (10 cards).

As some Magic concepts were being defined and further refined during this period (targeting a creature/player, the definition of a (non)permanent, the difference between a card owner and a card controller, etc.), it is expected that some German cards needed cleaning up. As always, German Revised on the left, German Fourth on the right.

• Blue Elemental Blast (eine rote Karte → eine bleibende rote Karte).
• Control Magic (über die verzauberte Kreatur → über eine Kreatur Deiner Wahl).
• Magical Hack (Ändere den Text einer Karte Deiner Wahl → Ändere den Text eines Zielspruchs).
• Raise Dead (Nimm ein Wesen aus dem Friedhof → Nimm ein Wesen aus Deinem Friedhof).
• Terror (Bringe eine Kreatur direkt auf den Friedhof → Begrabe die Zielkreatur).
• Disintegrate (einer Kreatur X Schadenspunkte → einer Kreatur Deiner Wahl X Schadenspunkte).
• Fireball (über mehrere Ziele verteilt → über Zielkreaturen und/oder Spieler verteilt).
• Firebreathing (Die verzauberte Kreatur erhält → Die durch Feuerodem verzauberte Kreatur erhält).
• Gaea's Liege (Wälder, die der Beherrscher → Wälder, die sein Beherrscher).
• Stream of Life (Du oder ein anderer Spieler Deiner Wahl → Ein Spieler Deiner Wahl).

Quite a few other cards also underwent rule alignments (Healing Salve, Paralyze, Stone Rain, etc.). However, only these 10 cards are not discernible by first applying the i difference and/or the umlaut difference.
